Here's the 2026 update most guides missed: several SW London councils now give you one or two free bulky waste collections a year before they charge a penny, and paid rates run from about £36 to £116 depending on item count and borough. The catch is speed. Councils don't do same-day — you book a slot, wait for the next available date on your normal collection day, and carry everything to the kerb yourself. A private man-and-van costs more (a single sofa runs roughly £45–£80, a small load from about £65–£99) but comes today, with two people who load it from the room. Simple rule: cheap, light and not in a hurry → council; heavy, urgent or up two flights of stairs → private.

How council bulky waste collection works

Every borough runs it much the same way. You book online (or by phone), list your items from a fixed menu, pay if you're past your free allowance, then pick from the dates the council offers — usually tied to your normal bin day. On the morning, you leave everything at the kerb by an early cut-off, and a crew takes it on their round. That's how council waste collection handles bulky items across SW London — a service some boroughs label council rubbish removal on their booking pages.

Three things trip people up. First, every object is a separate "item." A three-piece suite is three items; a bed is a frame plus a mattress — two items — so a small job climbs a price band fast. Second, you do all the carrying. The crew lifts from the kerb, not your first-floor flat, so a wardrobe down a narrow staircase at 7am is on you. Third, councils refuse a long list of things. Builders' and DIY waste (rubble, plasterboard, kitchen units, glass sheets), tyres, gas canisters, asbestos, garden waste and car parts are out across Merton, Richmond and Lambeth. • Merton — £39.75 for 1–3 / £66 for 4–6 (paid bookings from Oct 2026). Items: Tiered by item count. Free option: 1 free collection/year (up to 3 items) from 1 June 2026. Won't take: Garden waste, rubble, plasterboard, paint, tyres, gas canisters, asbestos, kitchen units, glass

• Richmond — £85 up to 5 items + £9.90/extra. Items: Up to 5 items. Free option: Over-60s £29; up to 2 free/year for low-income residents on benefits. Won't take: Fluorescent tubes, gas bottles, pianos, garden waste, motor parts, construction debris

A few things worth pulling out. Wandsworth's two free collections are the standout — renewed for another year in January 2026, saving households around £48 a year by the council's own estimate, with the service rated 4.8 out of 5. That single fact rewrites the old "council is expensive" story. Merton joins in from 1 June 2026 with one free collection a year (you'll need to be up to date on council tax). Richmond council rubbish removal costs £85 for up to five items — the priciest here — but it's cheap for over-60s (£29) and free twice a year for residents on qualifying benefits. Lambeth has no general free scheme, but its Emmaus reuse route is free for good-condition furniture, and estate residents are collected free.

One more figure the table can't hold: the wait. Councils don't publish blanket lead times — they let you pick from available dates, so it's the next available slot on your normal collection day, not same-day. Richmond's booking page says only that collections happen on a weekday after your normal waste day; third-party sources suggest up to about 14 days, but the council sets no fixed target. Treat any "2–4 weeks" you read elsewhere as an unverified estimate. What's certain is that none of them come today.

Is free bulky waste collection real?

Yes — sometimes, and it's worth checking before you pay anyone. Three honest free routes exist in SW London, each with a condition attached.

Your council's own free allowance. Wandsworth gives two free collections a year (up to 4 items each); Merton one from June 2026; Richmond up to two for residents on qualifying benefits. If you fit, this is genuinely £0 — confirm your borough's terms on the linked pages above.

Charity reuse. The British Heart Foundation and Emmaus collect furniture free — but only if it can be resold. For a sofa or armchair that means good condition, no rips exposing the inner fabric, and a fire-safety label still firmly attached. Cut the label off or leave a stain and they'll politely decline. Scrap and estate schemes. Scrap-metal collectors sometimes take white goods for nothing, and Lambeth Housing estate residents are collected free without booking or payment. The catch is the same across all three: free routes are slower, fussier about condition, and often "reusable only." If the item's broken, filthy, or you need it gone this week, you're choosing between the council's paid slot and a private van.

Council vs private: the real cost when you count the lifting

Sticker price isn't the whole story — the council quote assumes you are the labour. Take an old three-piece suite in a second-floor Battersea flat. Council route: three items, so Lambeth's £36 band (or a chunk of a free Wandsworth allowance) — but you and a mate still wrestle a sofa and two armchairs down two flights to the kerb by early morning, then wait for the next slot. If your back and your Saturday can absorb that, the council wins on cash.

When the council is genuinely the right call

We won't pretend private always wins. If you've got one light item, no deadline, a ground-floor flat and you're organised, the council is the sensible, cheap choice — and in Wandsworth or Merton it might cost nothing. A chest of drawers you can drag to the kerb yourself, booked two weeks ahead? Book the council. Don't pay us to do what your borough will do for free.

Private earns its keep on the opposite: multiple heavy items, a first- or second-floor flat, a deadline (new sofa landing Saturday, tenancy ending), or anything the council won't take. The Facebook-van trap: why licensing matters

Search "cheap rubbish removal" and you'll find someone on Facebook who'll do it for £20 cash. Here's why that's a false economy — and a legal risk that lands on you.

Under the household waste duty of care (Environmental Protection Act 1990, s.34), you're legally responsible for making sure whoever takes your waste is a licensed carrier who disposes of it properly.
