Loose load vs council green bin: which is cheaper?

Honest answer: it depends what you've got. A steady trickle of light garden waste year-round? A council green-bin scheme is almost always cheaper per litre. A one-off clearout, a shed's worth of debris, or anything the green scheme flat-out refuses? A loose load wins on time and hassle. Wandsworth is the outlier: up to five sacks of garden waste collected free every week, so light trimmings there cost nothing. Lambeth, Merton and Richmond charge roughly £95–£99 a year — brilliant value for regular, modest amounts of green waste collection.

Where they stop helping is capacity and content. A subscription bin holds what it holds — you can't put a summer of hedge cuttings, a rotten fence run and three bags of turf out in one go, and none of these schemes will touch soil, rubble or treated timber. That's the gap a loose load fills: light-and-regular (council) versus heavy-or-huge (us).

What the green bin won't take

Garden waste collections feed a composting stream — cuttings get turned into soil conditioner, and that only works if the material is genuinely compostable. So the schemes exclude anything that would contaminate the batch. Off the reject list:

• Soil, turf and rubble — inert waste, not garden waste (more on that below)

• Plastic plant pots — especially black ones, which sorting machinery can't detect, so they go in general waste

• Fence panels, trellis and treated timber — chemically treated wood, not compostable

• Sheds and large stones — stones must be kept out to protect the finished compost

• Herbicide-treated grass cuttings — excluded to keep the product clean

Recycle Now (WRAP) is blunt about it: plastics and large stones have to be minimised to make a quality compost, and black plastic pots belong in the general bin. We take all of the above in one go — no sorting on your part.

How to dispose of soil and turf

Soil, turf and rubble aren't garden waste at all — they're inert or hardcore waste, which is why no green bin takes them and why the tip caps how much you can bring. The law helps a little: since 31 December 2023, councils in England can't charge you to dispose of small amounts of DIY and construction waste — up to two 50-litre rubble bags — at a recycling centre (2026 figure — confirm at source). Useful for a couple of bags.

The catch is scale. At Merton's Garth Road HWRC (which serves much of SW London), soil and rubble are capped at six 80-litre bags per vehicle every six months, vans must pre-book, and van users are limited to 250kg over any six-month window and 12 visits a year (2026 estimate — confirm on the council's own page). A lawn's worth of lifted turf blows past that, so self-transport stops being realistic. Check your local HWRC's own rules first. That paperwork isn't just a nicety. Under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, any business moving your waste must be an Environment Agency-registered waste carrier and give you a transfer note — and you're within your rights to ask to see the carrier's registration before they load a thing. When to book: the garden waste calendar

Gardens produce waste in bursts, and knowing the rhythm saves money and stops you breaking the law by accident.

• March–April: the post-winter clearout. Everyone hits the garden at once when the weather turns — our busiest stretch, so book ahead. Prime time for winter storm debris, dead growth and the pile you've ignored since October.

• Autumn/winter: the safe window to cut hedges. The important one. Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, it's an offence to damage an active bird's nest, and the main nesting season runs roughly March to August. Best practice, and RSPB advice, is to trim in autumn or winter — and always check for active nests first, whatever the month, because the offence is triggered by a nest, not a date. Penalties are steep: an unlimited fine and up to six months' imprisonment.

• October–November: leaf fall. Deciduous streets bury patios and drains in weeks. A single collection clears the lot.
